Herculaneum Archaeological Park, 15 minutes by train
The Parco Archeologico di Ercolano is 15 km / 15 minutes by Circumvesuviana train from Maricelle Rooms, in Castellammare di Stabia. A UNESCO site like Pompei, Ercolano was buried by the 79 AD eruption and is today smaller but far better preserved, with intact upper floors and wooden structures that survived the centuries.
For our guests Ercolano makes the perfect half-day: from Castellammare di Stabia station it is just 15 minutes by Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi. Often less crowded than Pompei, it can be explored at an easy pace, leaving the afternoon free for the sea and the Gulf of Naples.
What to see at Ercolano
Patrician houses overlooking the shore, mosaics, shop signs and carbonised organic materials โ beams, doors, even food โ bring Roman daily life into a sharpness that is rare at Pompei. Ercolano and Pompei share the 3-day combined ticket, which also covers the villas of the Scavi di Stabia: you can pair them on the same itinerary, perhaps adding a climb up Vesuvio.
How to get there
By train (Circumvesuviana)
From Castellammare di Stabia station, the Circumvesuviana reaches the Ercolano Scavi stop in about 15 minutes; the park entrance, on Corso Resina, is about 600 metres on foot from the station. To reach the B&B, see how to reach Maricelle Rooms.
By car
From the A3 motorway, take the Ercolano exit; it is about 15 km from the B&B, then follow the signs for the excavations. In peak periods the train remains the more convenient choice.
