Amalfi Coast: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello from the Gulf
The Amalfi Coast is reached from Maricelle Rooms by seasonal ferry from the port of Castellammare di Stabia, 1 km from the B&B โ about 50 minutes to Positano โ or by car via Sorrento, about an hour. A UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 1997, it lines up Positano, Amalfi and Ravello along one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful coasts.
Having the port a kilometre away is a small luxury: when the ferries are running, our guests set off from the Gulf of Naples and are soon at the foot of Positano, skipping the hairpin bends and summer traffic of the coast road. Those who prefer the scenic drive can go by car via Sorrento and stop wherever they like.
Positano, Amalfi and Ravello
Three towns, three characters. Positano cascades down to the sea in pastel houses; Amalfi keeps its cathedral and the memory of the maritime republic; Ravello looks down from above through the gardens and terraces of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Between Agerola and Positano winds the Sentiero degli Dei, one of Italy's most spectacular hikes.
Positano
The vertical village of pastel houses tumbling down to the beach, reachable by ferry from the port.
Amalfi
A former maritime republic with its Arab-Norman cathedral, the historic heart of the coast.
Ravello
A balcony over the sea among the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, in the hills above Amalfi.
Getting there
By ferry (seasonal)
From the port of Castellammare di Stabia, 1 km from the B&B, seasonal ferries run to Positano (about 50 minutes) and Amalfi. The service is seasonal: check the operators' timetables before you set off. See also how to reach Maricelle Rooms.
By car
By car you go via Sorrento and then along the SS163 Amalfitana, about an hour to Positano. The road is glorious but narrow and winding, with limited, expensive parking in peak months: set off early.
By bus (SITA)
Out of season, or to avoid the car, SITA buses link Sorrento and Amalfi to the coastal towns. It is the cheapest option, but it can be crowded on summer weekends: allow for some waiting.
