Oplontis, the Villa of Poppaea near Pompeii
Oplontis, with the Villa di Poppea at Torre Annunziata, is ~11 km / ~15 minutes by car from Maricelle Rooms, in Castellammare di Stabia, or ~15–20 minutes by Circumvesuviana on the same Napoli–Sorrento line. A UNESCO site (listing 829), it is one of the best-preserved Roman villas in the Gulf.
For our guests Oplontis makes an easy, still-uncrowded half-day: the Circumvesuviana that stops in Castellammare di Stabia runs direct to the Torre Annunziata–Oplonti stop, a short walk from the entrance — no changes, no car. A focused visit, then home to the Gulf of Naples.
The Villa di Poppea
The Villa di Poppea (Villa A) is a sumptuous otium villa attributed to the family of Poppaea Sabina, Nero's second wife: rooms in Second-Style fresco, gardens and spaces of breathtaking luxury. It is the only part of the site open to visitors — the neighbouring Villa B (di Lucio Crasso Terzo) is not. Oplontis belongs to the Parco Archeologico di Pompei: the 3-day combined ticket pairs it with Pompei, the Scavi di Stabia and the Museo Archeologico di Stabia — ideal if you are staying nearby.
Getting there
By train (Circumvesuviana)
From Castellammare di Stabia station, the Circumvesuviana on the Napoli–Sorrento line reaches the Torre Annunziata–Oplonti stop in about 15–20 minutes, with no changes; from there the entrance is a short walk. Full details are on our how to reach Maricelle Rooms page.
By car
By car it is about 11 km / 15 minutes from the B&B. Handy if you pair Oplontis with Pompei or the Scavi di Stabia on the same day; on busy days, though, the train is still the simpler choice.
